Welcome to Poydras Home,
a Retirement Community in New Orleans
Somewhere in your heart haven’t you looked forward to a time in your life of greater freedom and enjoyment with fewer responsibilities and concerns? How, you ask? In New Orleans, you have an easy answer: Poydras Home.
Today, Poydras welcomes men and women to a true Continuing Care Retirement Community. Residents have the option of moving here at the independent living level with the assurance of additional living options such as assisted living, nursing care and memory support should changing health needs require those. Some become residents of Poydras at the assisted living and nursing care levels. For others, the PHASE Senior Day Program is a way of meeting personal and family needs and getting acquainted with the Poydras community. We have a deeply rooted tradition of making all who live at Poydras Home feel like part of a special family, and the depth of opportunities and services offered here is as broad as the Mississippi – now even deeper with the completion of our latest expansion. Like No Other…
The Celebratory Bicentennial Gala on Thursday evening, October 26th, will be the grand finale of our 200th birthday – an evening to remember that promises to be a celebration like no other!
President and Co-Founder of Hearthstone Alzheimer Care, Ltd. Dr. John Zeisel presented “Hopeful Aging” at Poydras Home on March 28th. Dr. Zeisel led us on a journey through the aging brain while exploring the possibilities for learning and connection for persons living with memory loss. This dynamic presentation, previously aired on PBS nationwide, communicated a hopeful message about memory and aging. Attendees were equipped with new strategies to help caregivers provide meaningful, engaging experiences to those living with memory challenges. “Hopeful Aging” examined brain health and vitality, memory systems and learning with a focus on Hearthstone’s innovative Learning for Life ™ program.
Poydras Home hosted a complimentary alfresco concert on our front lawn on the evening of Tuesday, May 9th, made possible by a generous sponsorship by Fidelity Bank. We celebrated our Bicentennial with a Big Brass Birthday Bash as the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra’s brass ensemble highlighted how brass instruments have been used throughout history in and out of orchestras. Attendees dined on free red beans and rice or brought in a picnic. This selection of popular, contemporary and American music in an outdoor setting proved perfect for families, friends and neighbors alike!
In 2010 the members of the Poydras Home Book Committee set out to have our institution’s rich history recorded in book form. That vision becomes a reality with LSU Press’ publication of “New Orleans Women And The Poydras Home – More Durable Than Marble.” Author Pamela Tyler chronicles the trials and tribulations of our all-woman board as they persisted from 1817 through today to deliver the mission of Poydras Home, first as an orphanage for female children of the Yellow Fever outbreaks and then as a place of cutting edge elder care, despite the challenges of gender bias and considerable financial hurdles.
