What Is Nursing Care?

Nursing Care is a higher level of support for elders who need more consistent help with daily personal care, medication administration, and ongoing care coordination than Assisted Living typically provides. It is appropriate when an elder needs assistance with numerous Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), such as bathing, grooming, dressing, transferring, ambulation, continence care, and dining.

Nursing Care at Poydras Home takes place within small, home-like settings, each with its own living room, kitchen, and dining space. Many residents transition into Nursing Care from Assisted Living as their care needs increase, and our team works to make that transition as smooth and comfortable as possible.

The Green House Project Model of Care

Poydras Home is proud to be Louisiana’s first community to implement the Green House® Project model of care, and it is the foundation of how we deliver Nursing Care for our residents.  Our two new three-story buildings linked by a majestic glass atrium opened in the summer of 2023 serving as the entryway for six separate homes within Poydras Home, one on each floor of the new buildings.

The Green House model is built around small, home-like environments, with private bedrooms and shared communal spaces at the center of daily life. At the heart of this model is what Poydras Home calls Meaningful Life: a person-directed, relationship-rich approach to daily living.

Rather than a fixed activity schedule, Meaningful Life is centered on knowing each elder as an individual and honoring their own rhythm, preferences, and choices throughout the day. This philosophy shapes everything from how we prepare meals to how Care Partners build relationships with the elders they support, with the goal of preserving dignity, autonomy, and a sense of purpose.

What Nursing Care Includes at Poydras Home

Families often come to this decision with many practical questions about daily life, personal support, and what their loved one’s routine may look like. Nursing Care brings those pieces together in a setting where elders can receive attentive support while remaining connected to comfort, familiarity, and community.

Daily Life and Accommodations

Nursing Care residents enjoy private bedrooms and bathrooms, along with access to shared balconies and secure patio spaces. We encourage our residents to make their space their own, adding their own furnishings and favorite items to their personal spaces.

Weekly housekeeping and linen service, personal laundry service, daily bed making, daily trash removal, and maintenance services are all included, so residents and families can focus on connection. Cable and WiFi are also available in each home.

Medical Care

We provide 24-hour licensed custodial Nursing Care with an excellent caregiver-to-resident ratio.

Nursing Care includes oversight from a Medical Director physician and access to a consulting psychiatrist.

On-site medical ancillary services, including dental, podiatry, wound care, and audiology, help make care more convenient for residents. Emergency call lights are located in both the bedroom and bathroom for added peace of mind.

Support for Activities of Daily Living

Nursing Care includes assistance with all Activities of Daily Living, including continence care, bathing, grooming, dressing, transferring, ambulation, and dining. Medication delivery and administration are included.

Dining and Nutrition

Residents have access to a dining space as well as casual counter service, available for all meals and snacks. They enjoy meals cooked on site in each home’s kitchen by the Care Partners of each house, served at flexible times.

Poydras Home dining is designed by our Executive Chef and registered dietician with an extensive, seasonal menu cycle, with individualized therapeutic diets accommodated.

Life Enrichment and Community Connection

Residents have access to a Life Enrichment calendar, with escorts provided to scheduled activities and social events. Planned programming and scheduled group outings offer regular opportunities for connection. Residents also have access to the Center for Healthy Living, which includes a therapy gym, fitness center, yoga room, salon, and library.

Care Planning and Ongoing Support

Nursing Care at Poydras Home includes quarterly Care Plan meetings, designed to review and adjust each resident’s care plan, discuss current status, address any changes, and share information among the care team and family.

These meetings help keep communication clear and support aligned as needs evolve over time, reinforcing our commitment to consistent, attentive care.

Nursing Care vs. Assisted Living

Assisted Living at Poydras Home typically supports elders who need help with daily routines, meals, medication reminders or management, and some Activities of Daily Living.

Nursing Care includes a higher level of daily support. This includes around-the-clock availability of licensed nurses and Certified Nurse Assistant Care Partners, medication delivery and administration, quarterly Care Plan meetings, and assistance with all Activities of Daily Living.
