Poydras Home’s three-story Garden House is home to Independent Living residents. Ten one-bedroom apartments serve individuals and couples aged 65 or older who have opted to transition from the responsibilities that come with maintaining a private home and embrace a new level of freedom, ease, and security. Independent Living includes evening meals served in Garden House’s private dining room, as well as weekly housekeeping services that include laundering and changing bed linens and towels for our residents. While Garden House residents who drive can enjoy guaranteed parking in a secure, gated, remote access private parking lot, weekly group transportation provided for banking, shopping, and more, as well as frequent dining and cultural excursions, make keeping a car on campus truly optional.
Each Garden House apartment features a fully-equipped kitchen, a large accessible bathroom with lavatory storage, a walk-in wardrobe closet, a utility closet, and additional storage for sundries. Pocket doors separate each apartment’s living/dining room from the rest of the living space. A first floor utility room with washer and dryer is accessible to all Garden House residents. Some apartments feature a large bay window while others boast an expansive picture window. We encourage Independent Living residents to personally decorate their spaces with a choice of designer paint colors, complemented by their own furnishings and favorite items, transforming the thoughtfully designed space into their own home.
In addition to its main dining room, Garden House includes a community living/game room with a large screen television and wood-burning fireplace. A welcoming wrap-around porch with ample seating overlooks the garden, which is visible from many of the apartments.
